Misdemeanor

Some people think Misdemeanors are nothing to worry about.  They can be small crimes, like an underage drinking ticket… or even some speeding tickets. They are not felonies.  It is not like you can go to prison, right?  Misdemeanors are not something to worry about only if being locked up inside the county jail for up to a year is not something that would bother you.

On the low side, a misdemeanor may result in 30 days in the county jail.  On the more serious side, it could be 364 days.  Even if you do not get jail, a misdemeanor may have a very serious effect on your life.  For instance, a misdemeanor on your record may result in:

  • Loss of your driver’s license
  • Deportation (for non-citizens)
  • Loss of your F.O.I.D. card
  • Mandatory Registration as a Sex Offender
  • Loss of financial aid for college
  • A “black mark” on an employment background check
